Skateboard Wheel’s buying guide.
Firstly the two main things to look out for are Size and Hardness. Size is the diameter (mm) and hardness is measured using a scale (durometer). And of course another few key point’s to look out for would be the colour and graphic!
Also, a lower durometer scale number represents a softer wheel with 75A being the softest and 101A the hardest. Although anything harder than 101A is represented with the letter B after the number instead. For instance, 81B (103A)
Size: Smaller Wheels (Up to 55mm)
Designed for freestyle, street or park styles of skating. Generally lighter and thinner offering increased maneuverability.
Bigger Wheels (55m or higher)
Designed for Bowl, Park, Vert and Cruising styles of skating. Furthermore they are slightly heavier/wider which excellent stability.
Hardness: Very Soft Wheels (75A – 85A)
Perfect for the roughest surfaces. Mainly designed above 60mm which works well for cruisers/longboards but smaller versions are a great choice too.
Soft Wheels (85A – 99A)
Designed for rough/smooth surfaces and also offer some slide potential. Perfect for a mix of cruising from A to B, skatepark’s and Street skating. We recommend this hardness for beginners!
Standard Wheels (101A)
Generally the default hardness for most wheels, they perform best on smooth surfaces. Great for skateparks or the streets.
Hard Wheels (103A+)
Specifically designed to have excellent slide potential, consequently this hardness is perfect for locking into grinds and slides. Perform’s best on smooth surfaces but still good for street skating due to their technical ability.
Wheels are one of the 3 main components on a skateboard alongside the Deck and Trucks. In conclusion it is important to pick the right ones that will compliment your ride style.
